What is a Teardrop Trailer?

A teardrop trailer is a small travel trailer with a lightweight and streamlined design. These trailers get their name from their shape. They have the profile of a teardrop. The front end is rounded and the trailer tapers to a point toward the rear. The wheels and tires usually sit outside of the body and are covered by fenders. The exterior of teardrop trailers can be made of metal, fiberglass, or wood.

The streamlined, curved shape gives these trailers their distinctive look and offers aerodynamic benefits. This makes teardrop trailers easier and more efficient to tow. They have a less effect on fuel economy than standard travel trailers

Most cars are capable of towing a teardrop trailer because they are so lightweight and aerodynamic. They can be towed by most vehicles, including small pickup trucks, compact SUVs, and even most sedans.

These are small campers. Teardrop trailers range in length from 8-12 feet. They 4-6 feet wide and 4-6 feet tall. They weigh anywhere from 500-4,000 pounds. Most models weigh less than 1000 pounds.

Teardrop trailers have a number of names. A teardrop trailer can also be referred to as a teardrop camper, bean trailer, teardrop caravan, tab camper, or droplet trailer.

Features and Amenities of Teardrop Trailers

Teardrop trailers have a small interior living space. Most models can accommodate two adults comfortably. Larger models are available that can sleep up to four people. Ultralight models may only have space for one person.

Most models feature interior lighting and electrical outlets for charging devices from an onboard battery. Some models have a mains power hookup. There are usually some cabinets inside for storing clothing and other items.

Most teardrop trailers have an outdoor kitchen on the back that is covered with a hatch that opens up. The kitchen on teardrop trailers usually has a small stove, fridge or cooler, some countertop space, and storage for cooking supplies. Some models have a sink and small freshwater and wastewater tanks.

Some modern teardrop trailers come with additional amenities like solar panels, air conditioning, or an entertainment system with a tv and speakers. Most teardrop trailers do not have a bathroom. They are too small. There are larger models with bathrooms available.

Teardrop trailers are designed for minimalist camping. They are ideal for solo campers, couples, and small families who don’t need all of the modern amenities.

Pros of Teardrop Trailers

A small teardrop trailer

Most vehicles can tow a teardrop trailer

Teardrop trailers are lightweight. Most models weigh less than 1,000 pounds (450 kg). This means you don’t need a large pickup truck or SUV. You can use whatever vehicle you already own. Most cars are capable of towing a lightweight trailer.

For example, the Toyota Prius has a towing capacity of around 1,600 pounds. The Toyota Corolla has a towing capacity of around 1,500 pounds. A Tesla Model Y has a towing capacity of around 3,500 pounds. These are some of the most popular vehicles on the road today. They all have more than enough towing capacity to tow a small teardrop trailer.

Of course, not all cars can tow all teardrop trailers. There are some large teardrop trailers that weigh 3,000-4,000 pounds. To tow these, you would need a larger vehicle such as a pickup truck or SUV.

Before you buy a teardrop trailer, you should check the towing capacity of your vehicle and check the weight of your trailer. Ideally, the trailer should weigh around 20% less than your towing capacity.

Teardrop trailers are compact

Teardrops are small campers. Most models measure around 4-6 feet wide by 8-10 feet long. They usually measure 4-6 feet in height.

Most models can sleep two adults comfortably. Some larger models can sleep 3-4. This makes teardrop trailers ideal for solo travelers and couples. They can also work okay for small families.

There are several benefits of using a smaller camper. It’s easier to drive with a small trailer. You can easily maneuver through urban areas and tight parking lots. You can more easily find parking with a small trailer. It’s also possible to fit in more campgrounds. Many campgrounds can’t accommodate vehicles longer than 27 feet. This is common in many national parks. There are also many off-grid boondocking campsites, free campsites, and dispersed campsites that can only be accessed with a small trailer.

Teardrop trailers are fuel-efficient

One of the biggest benefits of using a teardrop trailer is fuel efficiency. The streamlined shape gives these trailers excellent aerodynamics. The front end is rounded and the trailer narrows towards the rear. This minimizes aerodynamic drag. Wind resistance is the biggest force acting against you as you tow your trailer. In addition, teardrop trailers are lightweight, which means less rolling resistance. A lighter load means your vehicle’s engine doesn’t have to work as hard. This further increases fuel efficiency.

Of course, towing will affect your gas mileage. The decline in MPG is relatively small. With a teardrop trailer, your MPG might drop by around 3. With a larger travel trailer, your MPG might drop by around 7. Over the life of the RV, you could save thousands of dollars in fuel by towing a teardrop instead of a large boxy trailer.

It’s easy to tow a teardrop trailer

Teardrop trailers are easier to tow than larger travel trailers. There are several reasons for this. First, is the compact size. Their small size makes them more maneuverable. When you’re driving winding mountain roads or parking in a small campsite, the teardrop trailer’s small footprint makes them easy to navigate.

The lightweight of teardrop trailers also makes them easier to tow. They can be towed with smaller vehicles, including crossovers, small SUVs, compact pickups, and even some sedans. You don’t need a heavy-duty truck. You can use your daily driver.

The aerodynamics also make teardrop trailers easier to tow. Teardrop trailers cut through the air with minimal resistance. They aren’t as affected by wind as larger box-shaped RVs. The wind won’t blow you off the road while you’re driving.

Of course, there is a bit of a learning curve to towing a trailer. You’ll have to learn how to reverse. Backing up is less intuitive with a trailer. You also have to take wider turns so you don’t drive over a curb or clip another vehicle.

Teardrop trailers are affordable

An average teardrop trailer costs $10,000-$20,000. This makes them one of the most affordable types of RVs.

For those on a tight budget, entry-level teardrop trailers can be had for as little as $7,000. If you shop around, you can find used models even cheaper. It’s possible to buy a decent used teardrop trailer for under $5,000.

Higher-end teardrop trailers are also available for those who want a bit more luxury. Premium models can cost $25,000-$50,000. These models are larger and come equipped with higher end amenities.

Teardrop trailers are cheaper than traditional travel trailers because they require fewer materials to build. They are physically smaller and offer fewer amenities. This reduces manufacturing costs.

Because they are cheaper, teardrop trailers are cheaper to insure. Maintenance is also cheaper because there are fewer parts that can break. For example, there is no bathroom. There is minimal plumbing and electrical.

Teardrop trailers are easy to store

A teardrop trailer has a smaller footprint than most standard cars. This makes them easy to store. Teardrop trailers fit into standard-sized garages, driveways, or carports. In some cities, you can park your teardrop trailer on the street, just as you would with a car. Many storage facilities also have space for storing RVs. Because teardrops are small, they are cheaper to store, if you have to pay for storage.

More environmentally friendly

Most outdoors enthusiasts care deeply about the environment. Teardrop trailers are more environmentally friendly than larger RVs because they are more fuel-efficient. The aerodynamic design and light weight reduce fuel consumption. You’ll burn less gas when you use a teardrop trailer than you would if you were using a larger travel trailer or motorhome.

This reduces your carbon footprint. You can further reduce your carbon footprint by using a more fuel-efficient tow vehicle. For example, you could tow a teardrop trailer with a hybrid car or even an electric car. This makes teardrop trailers a great choice for environmentally conscious campers

Maintenance is minimal

One of the most attractive features of teardrop trailers is the ease of their maintenance. Teardrop trailers are pretty simple.

The plumbing systems on these trailers is minimal. Unlike many larger RVs with showers, toilets, and sinks, most teardrop trailers just come with a single sink. This means there are fewer pipes to worry about. Small teardrop trailers don’t have any plumbing at all.

The electrical system is simple as well. Most teardrop trailers just have a couple of lights inside and maybe some charge ports for your devices. That’s it. Some models do feature a solar system. That makes the electrical more complex.

Of course, teardrop trailers aren’t entirely free from maintenance. You need to keep the tires properly inflated and make sure the brake and turn signal lights function properly. Over time, RVs can leak. It’s a good idea to keep your trailer clean and check the seals from time to time.

Teardrop trailers can be off-road capable

Some teardrop trailers are designed to be off-road capable. off-road trailers can be driven over rocks, ruts, roots, mud, and sand.

Off-road teardrop trailers are designed a bit differently from standard trailers. They have reinforced chassis to prevent damage from twisting forces. They also have higher ground clearance. This prevents underbelly damage. These trailers also come with larger and knobbier off-road tires with better grip. In addition, off-road teardrop trailers come with enhanced suspension systems to improve stability. The outer shell is often made with durable materials that are resistant to dents and scratches.

Off-road teardrop trailers open up more camping opportunities. They’re perfect for camping in remote areas. You can reach secluded spots that you can’t reach with a standard trailer. You will need an off-road capable vehicle to tow an off-road camper.

for more info, check out my guide to off-road campers.

You’ll feel close to nature

Teardrop trailers strike a balance between comfort and the outdoor experience. In other words, they offer a nice middle ground between a tent camping and a large RV.

In a teardrop trailer, you sleep on a comfortable mattress. You’re protected from the wind and rain. You don’t have to deal with the discomfort of sleeping directly on the ground in a flimsy tent.

At the same time, you still feel like you’re in nature. Teardrop trailers usually have large windows that bring in daylight and allow for good airflow. You won’t feel like you’re sleeping in a hotel room like you do in a large RV.

Teardrop trailers are convenient

The trailer is always ready to go. You don’t have to pack and unpack for every adventure. During the camping season, you can keep all your gear loaded in the trailer. This saves time. You don’t have to deal with packing and unpacking every time you want to go camping. You’re also less likely to forget something when all of the essentials are already in your trailer. You can be more spontaneous this way.

When you arrive at your campsite, setup is also easy. All you have to do is unhook the trailer from your vehicle, stabilize it, and you’re done. Camp preparation is quick and easy.

The rear-access kitchenette is also extremely convenient for cooking. You can prepare some excellent meals wherever you are.

Cons of Teardrop Trailers

Teardrop trailers usually don’t have a bathroom

Due to the compact design, most teardrop trailers do not have space for a bathroom. If you wake up in the night and have to go to the bathroom, you’ll have to go outside. This is annoying and uncomfortable. Particularly if it’s cold and rainy.

Not having a bathroom means you have to rely on campsite facilities. Of course, not all campsites have a bathroom. If you’re camping in the backwoods in a dispersed campsite there won’t be any facilities.

In this case, you could build an outdoor bathroom. Composting toilets are popular among campers. Some campers simply use a bucket for emergencies. You can pair your toilet with a privacy tent.

Of course, you can also simply go to the bathroom outside. Bring a shovel to dig a cathole. Check out this guide to going to the bathroom in the woods for more info. This isn’t always an option. In some places, it’s illegal to go to the bathroom outside.

For bathing, you can mount a camp shower on the roof of your trailer or vehicle. There are sun-heated camp showers and electrically-heated systems available. These allow you to bathe while camping in the backwoods.

Some larger teardrop trailers have bathrooms. Some models feature a simple wet bath with a toilet, sink, and shower in a waterproofed area.

Teardrop trailers are uncomfortable in poor weather

In a teardrop trailer, you can’t stand up and move around like you can in larger RVs. Some models are so small that there is barely enough space to sit up.

On rainy, windy, or snowy days, the small interior can be uncomfortable. Particularly if you’re stuck inside with another person. It will feel cramped and uncomfortable.

One solution is to build an outdoor living space. You could install an awning on the side of your teardrop trailer or tow vehicle. Alternatively, you could bring a canopy tent with you. This gives you a place to relax outdoors that is protected from the rain and hot sun.

Some teardrop trailers also allow you to convert the bed into a couch during the day. This gives you a comfortable place to sit and read, watch a movie, or eat. If you expect to camp in poor weather frequently, look for a trailer with this option.

It’s also uncomfortable to cook in poor weather because you have to cook outside. The hatch does provide some protection from the rain. It’s not as comfortable as cooking indoors.

The living space is small

Most teardrop trailers are designed only for sleeping. Inside, there is a full or queen-sized. There may be a few small cubbies or cabinets for storage. That’s about it. There isn’t space for a TV or entertainment system

There isn’t space to stand up and move around inside a teardrop trailer. Some of the smaller models barely have space to sit up inside. If you’re taller than around 6’5”, you might not fit in a small teardrop.

Some models do allow you to fold the bed up into a couch during the day. This can make the interior feel a bit more roomy. There may also be a small table.

Teardrop trailers have a low profile. Most models stand only 4-5 feet tall. This improves aerodynamics and towing efficiency but there are drawbacks. You will bump your head when climbing in or out of the trailer.

The storage space is limited

When traveling with a teardrop trailer, you need to pack light. These trailers are designed for minimalists. With some careful packing, you can find space for all of the essentials.

Inside a teardrop trailer, you’ll find a few cubbies and cabinets for storing personal items, clothing, and other necessities. Some models offer an under-bed storage area. This is a good space for bulkier gear. I like to store some extra blankets and bulky winter jackets and boots under the bed. This is also a good place to store some emergency gear.

Teardrop trailers often offer external mounting options as well. Most teardrop trailers allow you to mount a roof rack. This would be a good place to carry a spare tire, kayaks, bikes, or a rooftop storage box. You could also mount solar panels on the roof rack.

Some teardrop trailers also offer side mounts. These are common on off-road teardrop trailers. These mounting points are perfect for attaching shovels, extra fuel canisters, traction boards, and other off-road gear.

The vehicle towing your teardrop trailer also offers additional storage. If you’re using a large SUV or pickup truck, your vehicle will offer a significant amount of space. If you’re towing with a sedan, you’ll also have the vehicle’s trunk to store gear. You could also mount a roof rack or cargo box on the tow vehicle for additional storage space.

The kitchen is outdoors

One of the most distinctive features of teardrop trailers is their outdoor kitchen. The kitchen is located at the back of the trailer, under a hatch that lifts up.

This hatch provides some protection from the sun and rain while you’re cooking. The kitchen is still exposed. A rainy, windy, or cold day will make cooking challenging and uncomfortable. Cooking under the hot sun isn’t very pleasant either.

In a larger travel trailer or motorhome, the kitchen is located inside. Cooking indoors in a climate-controlled environment is much more comfortable.

Teardrop trailer kitchens are pretty well-equipped. Most models come with a small gas stove. There is usually a refrigerator or cooler to store perishables and beverages. There are usually some cabinets to store kitchen essentials. In addition, there is some countertop space for prep. Most models also have some lighting in the kitchen area so you can see what you’re doing while you’re cooking in the dark. Some teardrop trailers also come with a sink and freshwater and wastewater tanks. This makes cleanup easier and allows you to maintain better hygiene.

Teardrop trailers aren’t ideal for taller people

Teardrop trailers can feel cramped if you’re on the taller side. Most teardrop trailers are around 4-5 feet tall. Headroom is limited. Tall campers might not have enough space to sit up. This can be uncomfortable. It also makes certain tasks difficult. For example, changing your clothes when you can’t even sit up can be annoying. Simply climbing in and out can also be a challenge for taller people.

Some models offer more space than others. If you’re taller than around 6’5″, you should test out a teardrop trailer before buying. You might find that a larger RV or trailer better suits your body type.

You have to tow

There is a learning curve when it comes to towing a trailer. Maneuvering with an additional load and the additional length behind your vehicle takes some getting used to. You have to take turns wider to avoid driving over a curb or hitting other vehicles.

Backing up with a trailer can be a challenge. It’s kind of counterintuitive if you’ve never done it before. Turning the steering wheel to the left makes the trailer go right, and vice-versa. It will take some practice.

Navigating tight spaces is also more difficult when you’re towing. When you’re pulling into a small parking lot or campsite, you’ll need to consider the additional length the trailer adds.

Sway is also an important consideration. Poor load balance, sudden gusts of wind, passing large vehicles, or even just taking a turn too quickly can cause the trailer to sway. Sway can be dangerous. To reduce sway, you need to properly balance the load in your trailer. You may also need a sway control hitch.

Teardrop trailers can feel claustrophobic

Imagine going to sleep inside a space that’s only 5 feet wide, 6 feet long, and 3 feet high. It can feel like trying to sleep in a coffin. Teardrop trailers can feel very confining. Particularly if you suffer from claustrophobia like I do. To make things worse, many teardrop trailers only have a couple of porthole windows. Not being able to see outside can make you feel even more restricted.

If you suffer from severe claustrophobia, this can be extremely uncomfortable. The sensation of being enclosed could cause anxiety. Some people have trouble getting asleep or staying asleep in a teardrop trailer.

Most teardrop trailers only sleep 2 people comfortably

Most teardrop trailers have a full or queen-sized bed. They can comfortably sleep two people. This makes teardrop trailers ideal for solo travelers or couples. Teardrop trailers aren’t really designed for families. There just isn’t space to sleep two adults plus kids. Some models just have a twin sized mattress inside. These are best for solo campers.

One potential solution is to use a ground tent in addition to the teardrop trailer. You could set up a tent to give kids their separate sleeping space while you and your partner sleep in the teardrop.

You have to store the trailer when not in use

A teardrop trailer takes up a parking spot. If you have a large driveway or garage, you could park your trailer there. If you live in a dense city where parking is limited, you’ll have to consider storage space.

In many cities, it is illegal to park a trailer on the street without moving it regularly. If you have a two car garage, you might not want to take up a whole space with your trailer.

If parking at home isn’t an option, you’ll have to pay for storage. This is an extra expense you’ll have to deal with. Depending on your location and the amenities the storage facility offers, fees can range from $50 to $200 per month. Over the lifetime of your RV, these costs can add up.

Teardrop trailers are more expensive than a tent

On average, a teardrop trailer costs around $12,000-$15,000. They come with a bed and a kitchenette.

To compare, you can buy a nice tent camping setup for under $1,000. This includes a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and camp stove. You could spend much less if you’re on a tight budget.

Some teardrop trailers are also extremely overpriced for what they are. There are basic models that sell for over $25,000. That’s a lot of money for such a simple trailer. There are also premium teardrop trailers that sell for over $60,000. These are basically travel trailers with a teardrop shape. Of course, you can save a good amount of money by buying used.

Of course, when it comes to RVs, teardrop trailers are some of the most affordable options. They are far cheaper than motorhomes, 5th wheels, and large travel trailers. A large travel trailer could cost $60,000-$80,000. A motorhome can easily cost over $150,000.

It really depends on your budget and the type of experience you’re looking for. If you’re on a budget, a ground tent is the better option. If you’re looking for an affordable RV, a teardrop trailer is a great choice.

Who Should Choose a Teardrop Trailer?

  • Solo travelers and couples: Teardrop trailers are designed to comfortably sleep one or two people.
  • Beginner RVers: If you’re a first time RV owner, a teardrop trailer is a good place to start. Its small size and ease of towing make it user-friendly. It’s also a smaller investment.
  • Budget travelers: Teardrop trailers are much more affordable than larger RVs. You could buy a nice used one for less than $10,000.
  • Environmentally conscious campers: Thanks to their lightweight and streamlined design, teardrop trailers offer better fuel efficiency than larger RVs. Fewer resources are also used in their construction. This makes them a more eco-friendly choice.
  • Those with limited storage space: Their compact size means they can fit in regular garages, driveways, or even some designated street parking areas. This makes teardrop trailers a good choice for those who live in the city.
  • Off-grid campers: Many teardrop trailers come equipped for off-grid camping. They may have solar panels and off-road capabilities.
  • Weekend warriors: If you’re someone who loves frequent, short getaways, a teardrop trailer is perfect. You can leave all of your gear packed inside. Just hook it up to your vehicle and you’re off.
  • Minimalists: Teardrop trailers allow you to enjoy a simpler way of camping without a bunch of luxury gear.

Who Shouldn’t Choose a Teardrop Trailer?

  • Large families: Those with large families will find the space too limiting. You may be able to squeeze 3 people in a teardrop trailer for a night or two but it will feel cramped.
  • Tall people: Due to their design, teardrop trailers often have restricted headroom. People taller than 6’5″ will find them uncomfortable.
  • Long trips: If you’re planning to stay in one place for a long time or take an extended road trip, the small living space of a teardrop trailer and the lack of amenities might not be ideal
  • Those who value luxury: Teardrop trailers don’t offer the same luxurious amenities that larger RVs offer. For example, there is no bathroom, indoor kitchen, washer and dryer, etc.
  • Those who prefer indoor facilities: Most teardrop trailers don’t have an indoor kitchen or bathroom.
  • People with limited vehicle storage: If you don’t have space to store your trailer in a garage or driveway, you will have to pay for storage
  • Those who suffer from claustrophobia: Teardrop trailers can feel a bit closed in. Those who feel anxious in tight spaces should consider this.

How to Choose a Teardrop Camper

Teardrop trailers come in a range of sizes and layouts. A few questions to ask yourself before you buy a trailer include:

  1. How many people do you plan to camp with? Most teardrop trailers are designed for solo campers or couples. There are larger models that can accommodate a small family (3-4 people).
  2. What’s your budget? Teardrop trailers range from basic models that are basically a bed on wheels to luxury models that include a kitchen, bathroom, solar, a/c, etc. A basic teardrop trailer might cost $10,000 while a fully equipped model can cost over $50,000. Setting a budget will help narrow down your options.
  3. Where do you plan to travel and camp? Do you plan to camp in established campgrounds or do you plan to travel off-grid? Some teardrop trailers are built with off-road capabilities. Others are designed for highway driving.
  4. What amenities and features do you need? Some campers might prioritize a kitchenette. Others might want built-in heating. Maybe you need extra storage space. List out some must-have features. This can help you eliminate trailers that won’t meet your needs.
  5. How much storage space do you need? If you’re planning longer trips or have specific equipment that you like to pack (like bikes or kayaks), considering storage is important. Some trailers come with external racks. Some have more internal storage than others.
  6. How will you store the trailer when it’s not in use? Consider the dimensions of the trailer. Do you have enough space in your driveway or garage or will you need to rent storage? Price out storage in your area so you know what to expect.
  7. What vehicle will you use to tow the teardrop trailer? You need to make sure that your vehicle can handle the weight of the trailer. Trailer weight can vary significantly. Check the towing capacity of your vehicle and buy a trailer that is under that capacity. Be sure to factor in the weight of your camping gear and supplies.
  8. Do you prefer a new trailer or am are you open buying used? This can affect the price, warranty, and the features available to you. Pre-owned trailers offer better value for money. New models come with the latest features and warranties.
  9. What kind of warranty support is available? This depends on the make and model. Some trailers come with limited warranties. Others come with a full one-year warranty.

A Bit of History of Teardrop Trailers

The history of the teardrop trailer goes back to the 1930s. At the time, the U.S. was building its highway system. People were starting to travel longer distances in their cars. Americans demanded more affordable ways to travel and explore the country. Teardrop trailers were optimized for aerodynamics and efficiency. This allowed these trailers to be towed by cars with smaller engines.

Early teardrop trailers were usually DIY projects. After returning home from WWII, soldiers would use blueprints from magazines to build these small campers. They used materials they had on hand as well as military surplus materials. For example, many early teardrop trailers had shiny aluminum siding that came from airplane wings.

The post-World War II era was the golden age for teardrop trailers. In the 1950s, the economy was strong and car culture became extremely popular. People wanted to explore America. Teardrop trailers were perfect for this. National parks and campgrounds across the country were full of these little campers.

Over time, teardrop trailers fell out of style. Vehicles became more capable of towing. People started using larger travel trailers and motorhomes with more amenities.

Today, the teardrop trailers is experiencing a bit of a renaissance. Modern teardrops offer comfort, simplicity, affordability, and ease of use.

FAQ About Teardrop Trailers

A teardrop camper

What is it Like to Camp in a Teardrop Trailer?

Compared to a tent, teardrop trailers are more comfortable and more convenient to use. The trailer provides more protection from the wind and rain. You also don’t have to sleep on the cold and uneven ground. A teardrop trailer is a major improvement over a tent in terms of comfort.

Another advantage of camping in a teardrop trailer is convenience. You can leave your gear in the camper, even when it’s not in use. Setting up camp is as easy as parking and stabilizing your trailer.

The integrated kitchen is also really convenient. Most models come with a gas stove, refrigerator, and even a sink. This is far more convenient than a simple camp stove and pot. You can cook up some tasty and healthy meals.

Can You Boondock with a Teardrop Trailer?

Teardrop trailers are perfect for boondocking. Thanks to their small size, they are incredibly mobile. They can fit into off-grid campsites where a larger motorhome or travel trailer couldn’t fit. This opens up your camping opportunities.

If you plan to boondock often, consider an off-road teardrop trailer. These rugged variants are designed specifically for traveling on rugged terrain. Off-road teardrop trailers come with larger tires, independent suspension systems, higher ground clearance, reinforced frames, and sturdy body materials. This allows them to travel over rugged and uneven terrain.

Many off-road teardrop trailers also come with solar panels and larger water tanks. This allows you to stay away from civilization longer without having to empty and refill tanks, resupply, or charge batteries.

Can You Sleep 4 People in a Teardrop Trailer?

Most teardrop trailers are designed to accommodate 1-2 people. You may be able to fit 3 people in some teardrop trailers but it wouldn’t be comfortable.

If you need to sleep 3 or 4 people, there are some options. There are larger teardrop models available. In addition to a bed, these models may come with a convertible dinette or sofa. Some models may feature fold-down beds or beds that drop down from the ceiling. These trailers are similar to conventional travel trailers but still maintain the teardrop shape.

Another option is to pack a ground tent and have two people sleep in the tent next to the trailer. This is a good option when camping with kids or when two couples are camping together.

Do Teardrop Campers Leak?

Teardrop trailers are sealed to prevent leaks. Leaks can develop over time. As these trailers reach the 5-10 years old, they might start showing signs of wear. This is when many RVs tend to develop minor leaks, particularly if they’ve been stored in extreme weather conditions or if they haven’t received regular maintenance. If you’ve left your trailer outside in the hot sun, the sealant can dry out and crack. This allows water to seep in.

If you notice signs of aging or potential weak spots in the sealing, proactive resealing can help prevent future leaks. If you notice a leak, repair it quickly to prevent damage from moisture, such as mold.

Final Thoughts About Teardrop Trailers

Teardrop trailers offer comfort, simplicity, convenience, affordability, and connection to nature. They are a great middle-ground between tent camping and luxury RVs.  If you’re just getting into RV camping, a teardrop trailer is an excellent choice.

The outdoor kitchen, ease of towing with smaller vehicles, fuel efficiency, and cozy sleeping space, make teardrop trailers hard to beat. Of course, teardrop trailers have their own set of drawbacks. Towing makes your vehicle less maneuverable. Storage space is limited. Teardrops are also kind of expensive for what they are.

Whether or not you decide to go with a teardrop trailer, I hope this guide has helped you in making your decision.
